Built like a tiny modern OS

TileDesk64 is not trying to imitate a generic vintage desktop. It deliberately brings modern workflow ideas to 8-bit hardware: tiling, keyboard control, terminal-centric usage, modular tools and a distinctive retro-tech identity.

Keyboard-first workflow

Fast navigation, command mode, workspace switching and tile control without relying on mouse-heavy interaction.

Tiling desktop

Split views, maximize, minimize and restore. Keep multiple tools visible at the same time in a compact C64-friendly layout.

Retro power tools

Editor, commander-style file manager, SID player, Linux-inspired terminal and htop64 all fit naturally into the same environment.

Feature showcase

The first release is already rich enough to feel like a serious retro productivity environment, not just a tech demo.

Tiling Window Manager Workspaces, focus handling, split logic, maximize/minimize/restore and command mode without editor hotkey conflicts.
Commander + PRG workflow Commander-style file handling, PRG open/run concepts, BASIC handoff and shell return ideas.
Terminal + htop64 A Linux-inspired shell experience with history, tab completion, pseudo filesystem commands and a custom C64 system monitor.
Experimental GPT Tile Concept and bridge-ready integration for external AI access through a proxy or VICE-friendly test mode.

PETSCII / retro identity

TileDesk64 is meant to look like a product, not just source code. Branding, splash screens, footer credits and supporter slots all reinforce that.

FAQ

Keep expectations clear. That helps both buyers and supporters understand what TileDesk64 is meant to be.

Is TileDesk64 a full operating system?

No. It is a modular, keyboard-first desktop environment for the Commodore 64 using a cooperative workflow model.

Does GPT run directly on the C64?

No. The GPT concept works through an external bridge or proxy. The C64 acts as the frontend.

Is this more than enough for a first release?

Yes. The current scope is already feature-rich for a v1.0 and should focus on polish, stability and presentation next.

Can this be sold or used for Patreon?

Yes. The concept is distinctive enough to be attractive to retro developers, C64 enthusiasts and supporters who enjoy ambitious niche software.
